Thanksgiving is a week away, but holiday shopping is already in full swing and Nassau County police want to make sure you have a safe holiday season.

Nassau police say they are stepping up patrols at the county's larger shopping areas, where uniformed and plainclothes officers will work with mall security.

There will also be mounted officers patrolling in parking lots, keeping an eye out for suspicious people possibly trying to steal items from vehicles.

Police say one big issue is keyless ignition fobs, and people leaving them in cars. They say when they park, about 97% of cars stolen nowadays are because of fobs being left behind.

"Anybody can go up to that door, if the door was open, open the door. It takes just five seconds and you're on your way. And you're leaving the mall. We want to reduce that amount of crime, those crimes of opportunity, and that's what we're here to do today," says Deputy Lt. Richard LeBrun.

Nassau police say the bottom line is to be aware of your surroundings at all times, especially when leaving the mall with lots of packages.
