Officials: Machine used in LIRR track work broke open radioactive tool in Westbury

Officials say a piece of machinery being used for the Long Island Rail Road expansion project hit a piece of equipment with radioactive material inside Friday afternoon in Westbury.
The incident happened east of School Street during construction on the third track.
Authorities say the tool that broke is used to measure soil density.
The MTA says nothing leaked from the equipment and the public was not in danger.
The mayor of Westbury reassured residents that the situation was under control. “The incident was of a nature that there were no evacuations that were necessary, and it was relatively contained to a small area in the right of way,” he says.
The mayor adds that if the damage done turns out to be more serious, that information will be sent out. He says the third track is an important project that needs to be completed properly.
