9th tornado of the year touches down in Morris County

Posted: Updated:

A Halloween night storm brought New Jersey’s ninth tornado this year through Morris County.

Madison saw the brunt of the damage when an EF1 tornado crossed through the area. Florham Park also saw some damage. Wind speeds were around 90 mph.

“This could have been a true disaster for our structure of our home and for my family’s lives,” says Florham Park resident Gina Iuso.

Iuso says that her neighborhood was awoken abruptly when trees smashed into nearby homes.

“The massive amounts of debris hitting the back of the house frightened us, woke us up out of a sound sleep, and brought my children downstairs,” she says.

The National Weather Service confirmed the tornado Sunday. A team from the NWS headed out to Morris County over the weekend to assess the damage.

Weather experts say that although nine tornados in one year is a lot – it isn’t close to the record. New Jersey saw 17 confirmed tornados in 1989.
