Football, American Dream, rush hour pose test for congestion around MetLife Stadium

Posted: Updated:

Monday night was a big test for congestion around MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford.

The Giants played the Dallas Cowboys on “Monday Night Football” at the home stadium.

Besides football fans traveling to Monday night’s game, there was traffic from the evening rush hour, people visiting Meadowlands Racetrack and those who were visiting the partially opened American Dream megamall.

News 12 New Jersey’s Erika Shych drove on Route 3 near the stadium Monday around 4 p.m. and encountered slow traffic from people heading to the Giants game early to tailgate and others just traveling home from work.

Drivers were urged to give themselves a lot of extra time if they are traveling around East Rutherford and Secaucus Monday night.

New Jersey Transit does have some options for getting to and from the Meadowlands for those who do not wish to drive. A train heading to MetLife Stadium leaves the Secaucus Train station starting at 4:54 p.m. and going back and forth all night.

Buses go to American Dream but the last bus back to Secaucus will be at 11:30 p.m.

News 12 caught up with some Giants fans at Redd’s in Carlstadt. The bar runs a shuttle to the stadium on game days. But most said that they weren’t too concerned about the traffic in the area.

"Anytime you're adding extra cars to the road it is an issue. We did add a few extra shuttles today to try and make sure nothing happens and the ordinary people don't have to wait too long but we don't expect much at all,” says Doug Palsi, of Redd’s.

It is important to note that only a few attractions inside American Dream are currently open – the Nickelodeon Universe amusement park and a few others. Most of the retail space will not open until sometime in 2020 – and this could increase the traffic in the area.
