Reported measles case prompts cancellation of sports, recreational activities in Nutley

Posted: Updated:

A reported measles case prompted the cancellation of all sports and recreational activities in Nutley this weekend.

Officials from the Parks and Recreation Department say the cancellations were a precaution after a measles case was reported at Washington Elementary School.

The Nutley Health Department has declared there is no immediate health crisis, but it's something to be aware of.

News 12 is told that although sports and activities are canceled, parks are still open to the public.

Nutley Public Schools also warns parents of a potential measles exposure. Some students could have been exposed on Friday, Sept. 27. The school district says the school has since been sanitized.

There have been 19 confirmed cases of measles in New Jersey and 1,200 nationwide this year. Twelve of these cases are associated with the measles outbreak in Ocean County this year, which was considered over as of May 16.

Measles is a contagious respiratory disease caused by a virus. The symptoms include rash, high fever, cough, runny nose and red, watery eyes.

Health officials say measles is a vaccine-preventable disease. One dose of measles vaccine is about 93% effective at preventing measles if exposed to the virus, and two doses are about 97% effective.

It's not known if the person who contracted the measles was vaccinated.

Recreational activities are expected to resume Monday.
