A Bayonne woman is on a mission to honor fallen members of the military and first responders.
Deb Green runs every few days from Bayonne to Hoboken – about 7 miles – all while carrying an American flag to honor those who lost their lives in service.
“They just want people to remember. They just want people to know who their loved one was,” Green says.
Green says that she has met some gracious people while on her runs and reflects on a man she once met.
“And I come to find out his son was killed in Afghanistan in the Marine Corps,” Green says. “And that’s why I do it. Because I would have never have known that. I would have never been able to honor his son by name.”
Green’s own family has a history of military service. Her husband and son are on active duty and her father served in Operation Desert Storm.
Running also has a personal significance, according to Green.
“I was actually quite heavy. I was over 300 pounds, so I couldn’t run,” she says.
Green then lost 170 pounds and now works as a fitness trainer. She is also active in the group Honor and Remember, which recognizes fallen service members.
She says that families have often given her photos of their loved ones. She says that she knows all of their names.
"Looking into the eyes of Gold Star moms, it definitely puts into perspective how fortunate we are and how grateful we should be to those families,” Green says.
Green plans to run in the New York City Marathon next month to benefit charity.
