New York City has banned the use of the term "illegal alien" when it’s used with intent to demean, humiliate or harass a person -- and using the word could result in a hefty fine.

The ban is part of a new guidance to a New York City human rights law.

The new guidelines also prohibit harassing or discriminating against someone for their use of another language or their limited English proficiency, and threatening to call ICE on a person based on a discriminatory motive.

Examples of violations include harassing a restaurant patron because of their accent, paying a lower wage or withholding wages to workers because of their immigration status – among others.

Violators face a fine up to $250,000.
