First day of fall sees above-average temps; Is it normal?

Monday marked the first day of autumn but temperatures in the upper-80s made it feel as if it was still the middle of summer.
The warm temperatures this late in the season may leave some New Jerseyans wondering if this is normal.
“This is weather. Anything that's happening on one particular day is simply weather. Climate is the longer-term average of that,” says Climate Central Meteorologist Sean Sublette.
Sublette says that the trends continue to show warmer seasons across New Jersey. Since 1970, the average fall temperature in Newark is up by 1.3 degrees. In Atlantic City, it is up nearly 3 degrees.
“You're going to have some hotter spells and some cooler spells. But we're starting to see these hotter spells lasting a little later into the summer and drifting into early fall,” he says.
The National Weather Service Fall outlook shows that the entire country is seeing above-average temperatures, with the northeast forecasted as being one of the warmest spots.
New Jersey will see cooler temperatures this week before things warm up again for the weekend.
