September is Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month and one woman is sharing her story on how she survived what many call the silent killer.
Ovarian cancer causes more deaths each year. It is the most diagnosed gynecologic cancer in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Quinn Alfinito-Renta started her fight in 2009 when she said she didn't feel too well and talked with her doctor about a CT scan. Doctors found a tumor on each ovary.
"The statistics for that even with all the rounds of chemo is a five-year survival rate -- and I just celebrated my 10th," said Alfinito-Renta.
Doctors operated on Quinn and she started six rounds of chemo. Her husband, kids and friends were by her side the entire fight.
During her follow-up CT scans, it showed Quinn had an unrelated dance with thyroid cancer. However, she still looked for the positive in the situation.
"If it hadn't been for the follow up CAT scan they wouldn't have even seen that, so I guess it was lucky that I had that follow up CAT scan when I did," said Alfinito-Renta.
Quinn received her treated at Montefiore Medical Center. Doctors told News 12that the cancer is very tough to fight.
Quinn used to have to check-ups every six months and now she has graduated to every year. Quinn says she is focusing her time on helping other people by sharing her symptoms and what they should do about them.
