Troopers responded to a crash involving a tractor-trailer on the northbound side of the New Jersey Turnpike Sunday evening.
The fiery crash occurred near interchange 12 around 6: 27 p.m.
Officials say they got an initial call of a tractor-trailer and car accident.
The chief of Carteret's fire department says the fire is out now, but the crash resulted in intense flames and billowing smoke. He estimates that more than 30 firefighters from surrounding departments responded to the two-alarm fire.
The chief says the preliminary investigation shows that the tractor-trailer fell from an overpass of one of the exit ramps from the New Jersey Turnpike into Carteret. He says the tractor-trailer housed a refrigerator unit that was loaded fruit and/or produce. It ignited when it fell, and the accident site was on New Jersey Turnpike property.
