Boy with autism dropped off at wrong spot after first day of kindergarten

A New Jersey mother says that she was furious to find out that her 5-year-old son, who has autism, was dropped off at the wrong location after his first day of kindergarten.

Mikki Fuller of Bloomfield says she put her son Justice on the bus Wednesday morning, expecting him to return to the correct location that afternoon.

"We took him outside, got on the bus and we thought we were going to have a good day - a nice memory,” she says.

Fuller says her son made it to Berkeley Elementary School without a hitch. But she says it was after school that the problem occurred – one that she learned of while at work several miles away in Newark.

“At like 3:45 p.m. I got a call from Red Carpet Day care, which is the previous day care that we used,” Fuller says. “I said to the guy, ‘Please tell me they didn’t drop him off at Red Carpet.’ He lighted and said, ‘Yeah, they did.”

Fuller says that due to her son’s autism, any change in his schedule or something happening that is unexpected can cause a problem.

"He gets very anxious. He’ll chew on his shirt, chew on his hat and shoes. He’ll cry, he’ll whine, tantrums. Sometimes he'll urinate in himself,” she says.

Fuller said she contacted the school in person back in June, telling them about her son's drop-off at home. She was disappointed this error was made by the school district.

"I honestly don't want to see this happen to any other parent and student,” Fuller says.

Fuller says that she called the school to complain about the mistake. Justice was on the correct school bus home Thursday.
