Prosecutor: South Plainfield man charged with possessing destructive device

Posted: Updated:

The Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office says a South Plainfield man has been charged with possessing a destructive device in connection to the cancellation of the South Plainfield Labor Day parade Monday.

They say Thomas G. Kaiser, 55, was arrested. Police had canceled the parade citing a security concern.

Prosecutors say that they were investigating a suspicious package with a destructive device that was dropped off to Donovan's Reef in Sea Bright on Sunday when they were lead to Kaiser.

During their investigation, officials say that more destructive devices were discovered near Kaiser's home. They say that Kaiser's home was close to the start of the parade route.

Kaiser's brother said it was a firework, not a bomb.

"He brought a firework to a friend that was in a bar," said Bob Kaiser. "They searched the house, bomb dogs, 14 officers found nothing in the house, nothing on the parade route. Nothing in his vehicle."

Officials say Kaiser is expected to face additional charges.

Gov. Phil Murphy and his wife, Tammy Murphy were scheduled to be at the parade. The parade was supposed to kick off at 10 a.m.

This year was supposed to be the 62nd annual parade.
