Football players are making their final push to get noticed with only a few days left to go before the start of the new NFL season.
It's the final week of New York Giants training camp. Former Monmouth University teammates Reggie White Jr. and Jake Powell have one more preseason game to make an impression before head coach Pat Shurmur cuts the roster from 90 players to 53 at the end of this week.
“I'm looking forward to that and getting a lot of reps in the second half and showing the coaches what I can do and just trying to fight for the 53-man roster,” says Powell.
Powell, a Marlton native, joined Giants camp late after being waived by the New Orleans Saints. He says that he was happy to know that White, his former teammate, would be there.
“To look around and see Reg, beings up old memories,” he says. “I feel a lot more comfortable with him out here. We’re kind of both in the same situation.”
White was signed to New York as an undrafted free agent in the spring. In his first three preseason games, he had six receptions for 100 yards. He says he plans to leave it all on the field in the final preseason game on Thursday.
“Say a prayer before the game and just go out there and have fun and compete and try to make plays whenever I get the chance to.”
White and Powell make history by being the first former Monmouth University players to play on the same NFL team.
The Giants will have to firm up their full roster by 4 p.m. Saturday.
