Officials: Corrections officer dead after police pursuit ends in 2-car crash in Newark

Posted: Updated:

A police pursuit ended in a two-car crash in Newark, killing a corrections officer who was not involved in the chase, officials say.

Hillside police say they were pursuing a silver Altima onto Bragraw Avenue. The Attorney General's Office says the Altima broadsided a dark-colored Mustang, forcing it into the telephone pole.

The Mustang driver, Omar Martin, who worked as a corrections officer at Northern State Prison for 12 years, was trapped in the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene. Officials say he was not involved in the pursuit.

Officials say three suspects were quickly taken into custody. Two of those suspects were taken to a hospital for treatment.

A GoFundMe page has been set up for Martin.
