Elizabeth boy gets first haircut to donate to friend with cancer

A 12-year-old from Elizabeth got his first full haircut Thursday.
Prince Rodriguez started growing his hair nine years ago as a way to show support when his sister was diagnosed with cancer.

His mother, Leslie Bedford, says he originally planned to donate his hair to his sister, but she died two years ago. Rodriguez now decided to give it to a friend battling cancer.

Rodriguez has also been raising money and awareness for Family Promise, a national organization that helps families experiencing homelessness.

Bedford says when her daughter died, Family Promise stepped in and helped.

Eventually, Rodriguez got his long-awaited haircut met with applause and pride from his mother.

"He looks so awesome but I want him to get used to it," Bedford said. "But he looks gorgeous."

Bedford tells News 12 that her son has an incredibly giving heart and this is his way of giving back.
