A kitten found wandering in traffic on the George Washington Bridge is now waiting for his “forever home.”

The kitten, named Highway by his rescuers, was found darting in and out of traffic on the bridge Monday morning. A good Samaritan picked him up and left him with the Port Authority police, who then handed him off the Bergen County Animal Shelter. He is being cared for there until he can be adopted.

Bergen County Animal Shelter director Deborah Yankow says that the kitten is believed to be about six weeks old. She says that he is a bit skinny from not having eaten for a few days, but is overall in good health.

“He’s friendly, so I’d imagine he was handled by humans. Usually, by six, seven weeks old they get hissy if not handled and he’s not hissing. He’s actually purring, but he’s scared,” she says.

Yankow says that Highway won’t be available for adoption for a few weeks. But she says that there are many other kittens at the shelter that do need new homes.
