New technology was used to repair a broken water main in Clifton that was over a century old.

The sleeve on the 20-inch water line was installed in the late-1800s.

As part of the repair process, Passaic Valley Water Commission officials decided to install a new valve. They say that the work takes longer to complete but thousands of customers were able to keep their water service uninterrupted Monday night and Tuesday morning.

Only about 100 people had water service interrupted Tuesday. Passaic Valley Water Commission executive director Joe Bella said that it could have been over 1,000 people if they had made repairs the old way.

Bella says that they've done this enough to know a new valve works well with that old pipe and credits those who installed the line over a century ago.

The water service has since been restored.
