Hundreds attend funeral for fallen Asbury Park police officer

Hundreds of mourners gathered Monday to pay respects to an Asbury Park police officer who died while on duty.

Mourners gathered at the Paramount Theatre Monday morning for the Detective April Bird’s funeral. Bird’s fellow officers carried her American flag-covered casket while bagpipes played.

“Det. Bird had an infectious smile and greeted everyone with her dynamic personality. Our thoughts, prayers & most sincere condolences go out to Det. Bird's family and the entire Asbury Park Police Department,” the Allenhurst police chief wrote on Facebook on the day Bird died.

Bird died Aug. 5 while investigating a shooting. Authorities say that she suffered a “medical episode.”

The exact cause of Bird’s death was not disclosed.
