Officials: Police officer attacked by pit bull, shot fired

Officials in Little Egg Harbor Township say a police officer was attacked by a pit bull after responding to an active disturbance at a home.
The incident happened Friday in the Mystic Islands section of town.
According to officials, the officer was responding to a home when the pit bull ran out of the home and clamped down on him. The residence is well known to police, and several officers responded.

Officials say the dog then lunged at another officer.
Police tried to shoot the animal, but missed.
The officer, who was initially attacked, was transported to a hospital and treated for a puncture wound. He was later released.
The dog was not injured and was transported to the Ocean County Animal Shelter, where the animal is currently being held.
