A two-alarm fire at an apartment building in Highland Park left several families displaced Monday.
Officials say the fire broke out around 4:15 a.m. on Forest Glen Drive. They say the roof collapsed during the fire, and that it took several hours to put out due to hotspots.
Residents of the building say they had been sleeping when the fire started, and that the fire was extremely intense. Firefighters from five departments responded to the scene.
Highland Park Fire Chief Tony Szemereta says that there are holes burned through the floor, meaning that the firefighters had to be extra cautious. Fire officials say they were able to keep the fire contained to six units, but the damage is severe.
Some residents of the building say they lost everything, and that this is the second fire in six months.
EMS says one firefighter was taken to the hospital with an arm injury. Officials say everyone safely evacuated the building.
The Red Cross says it will be assisting those affected by the fire.
