Walkathon held in Jersey City to raise relief funds for Mozambique cyclones

Posted: Updated:
JERSEY CITY -

The 23rd annual New Life Family Walkathon took place Sunday in Jersey City to support Mozambique disaster relief efforts.

About 2,500 volunteers signed up for the three-mile walkathon at Liberty State Park.

Mozambique was hit by two devastating cyclones this past March. Ambassador of Mozambique to the United States, Carlos Dos Santos, says the first cyclone killed 600 people in the central region of the country, and the second killed nearly 100 in the northern part. He says severe damage was done to infrastructure after both cyclones.

Sunday was the fifth walkathon organized by the International WeLoveU Foundation to help Mozambique. Others took place in the Philippines, Peru, South Korea and Brazil.

John Power, a spokesperson for WeLoveU, says, "Whenever we see these disasters taking place in underdeveloped countries, it's a part of our responsibility as a global family to help however we can."

The ambassador from the embassy of Mozambique says he is grateful for Sunday's event. He tells News 12 that the $50,000 raised in Jersey City for the relief efforts made will have a great impact as the country rebuilds.
