Officials: Swatting incident with hoax shooting stemmed from online gaming

Authorities in Toms River are looking into a swatting incident that possibly stemmed from online gaming.

Police received a call Monday around 11 a.m. at Sierra Drive about a potential shooting, hostage situation and pipe bomb.

Contact was made with the homeowner and occupants of the home, and the incident turned out to be a hoax.

According to early investigation, the incident was a hoax stemming from online gaming.

While responding to the incident, an officer was involved in a car crash. He was transported to Community Medical Center, where he was treated for minor injuries and released.

The other driver was not injured.
