Police: Man accused of assaulting social worker during evaluation in Garden City

A Bethpage man is accused of attacking a social worker during an evaluation in Garden City.
Police say 63-year-old Richard Schipani was being evaluated at the Nassau County Social Services building around 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, when he suddenly began to attack the female social worker.
Authorities say Schipani refused to answer questions and then became combative. When the social worker tried to leave, court documents alleged he "grabbed her, picked her up by her hair and threw her on the floor."
Schipani then allegedly got on top of her and punched her multiple times in the head and chest.
Nassau County Executive Laura Curran says bystanders and security officers immediately jumped in to help. She says she met with the victim Wednesday along with her co-workers.
"I spoke with the employees," Curran says. "A lot of them are still shaken up."
The social worker was taken to the hospital to be treated for her injuries. Her condition is unknown at this time.
When officers responded to the scene, Schipani allegedly also fought with them.
Schipani is charged with felony assault and resisting arrest.
