Nine animals were tossed from moving vehicles in Suffolk in less than one month, in what the Suffolk SPCA is calling an epidemic.
The SPCA says a witness saw that a cat was thrown from a vehicle on Route 231 in Deer Park on June 24. The live kitten was struck and killed by another car.
The SPCA says that five more kittens were tossed from a vehicle near the entrance ramp for the Southern State Parkway in Islip on July 1.
They say two of the kittens were discovered in front of the 7-Eleven on Sunrise Highway in Islip Terrace. The conditions of the other three kittens are not known.
Investigators say four days later, two kittens were believed to be thrown from a car on Wading River Hollow Road in Ridge. The two kittens were in critical condition when they were taken to East End Veterinary Center. Doctors now say these kittens are recovering well, and they hope they will be able to find them a permanent home.
On July 9, officials say a dog was thrown from an SUV on Laurelton Drive in Mastic Beach.
The SPCA says that there is no excuse for treating an animal this way, and it will be pursuing felony charges against the alleged abusers.
The Suffolk County SPCA is putting out a $2,000 reward for information that leads to an arrest on any of these incidents.
Anyone with information is asked to call the Suffolk County SPCA at 631-382-7722.
