NEWARK -

Some Essex County residents got a surprise when they reported for jury duty in Newark.

One of the prospective jurors was Sen. Cory Booker, who took time out from his presidential primary campaign to report to the Essex County courthouse on Thursday.

Some people tweeted selfies with the former Newark mayor. Booker also posted a video on his Twitter account wishing a potential juror a happy birthday.

“This is the best jury room in all of America,” Booker said.

Booker served as mayor from 2006 to 2013 and lives in downtown Newark, about a mile from the courthouse.

The Associated Press wire services contributed to this report.
