Those looking for the perfect summer getaway may not have to go far thanks to a beach escape right in the borough.

It is not hard to imagine why City Island was voted this week’s winner of the News 12 Road Trip!

Both residents and visitors alike call it a hidden gem.

Bill Stanton, the president of the City Island Civic Association, says the best way to start off a trip to City Island is to visit the “unofficial town watering hole,” City Island Diner.

"We meet, we have great food, companionship, the coffee's great and you got to try the chili,” says Stanton.

City Island is known for its many seafood restaurants, from Lobster Box to another haven for residents, The Black Whale. However, the options don’t stop there.

Those in the mood for ice cream can head to Lickedy Split. Jill’s cottage has fresh flowers, and Clipper Coffee is great for those who need a caffeine pick-me-up.

"It's filled with old-timers, salt of the earth that know everything about life and just choose to live a peaceful fun existence helping each other,” says resident David Ellis.

Those who live here say they always welcome new faces.

"Come visit City Island and learn a lot more about the island, and yourself, when you visit,” says Stanton.
