ELIZABETH -

A weekend protest at an immigration detention center in Elizabeth led to the arrests of 36 demonstrators.

Elizabeth officials say that the people were part of a group of at least 100 people protesting against the conditions inside the facility that houses illegal immigrants.

Police say that the 36 were arrested for “obstructing a public passage.” They say that the demonstrators were asked several times to move and were allegedly blocking trucks that “had nothing to do with the detention center,” from traveling.

The protest was organized by the group “Never Again: Jews against ICE.”
