Newark Liberty Int'l Airport reopens after United flight makes emergency landing

NEWARK -

Flights have resumed at Newark Liberty International Airport after a plane heading from New York to Texas made an emergency landing there Saturday morning, halting all departures and arrivals.

The Port Authority says a United flight that departed LaGuardia Airport for Houston with 133 people on board made an emergency landing at Newark around 8:30 a.m. due to a hydraulic issue. The plane blew a tire on landing and there was other structural damage that forced closure of the runway.

The emergency landing forced a "brief suspension of flights in and out" of Newark, the airport said.

Passengers deplaned on the runway and were taken by bus to Gate 71 at Terminal C. They say they're thankful that the flight crew handled the situation so well.

The Port Authority says it has reports of "a few minor injuries."

The plane was towed from the runway.

The airport has reopened, but there were delays throughout the day Saturday.

According to flight tracker Flight Aware, there were at least 307 delays in and out of Newark Saturday, along with at least 34 cancellations.

United says it is covering the cost of any changing flights Saturday and Sunday.
