School officials ID boy who drowned in Lake Valhalla

Montville Township school officials have identified the 12-year-old boy who drowned in Lake Valhalla while swimming Wednesday afternoon.

Aaron Melzer was a seventh grader at Lazar Middle School.

Officials say that the boy was swimming at the Lake Valhalla Club when he went under the water. No one noticed that he was missing for about 20 minutes.

First responders performed CPR on the boy, but he did not survive.

Club members say that there are typically two lifeguards on duty at the lake at all times. Law enforcement agencies are investigating.

School officials say that counselors will be at the school Friday and Monday as the community deals with the death.
