Airbus considers making an electric-hybrid jet

NEW YORK -

Here’s the latest business and tech headlines from Cheddar.

Southwest Airlines is joining its rival American Airlines in extending Boeing 737 Max cancellations. The air carrier says it is removing the plane from its schedules through Labor Day weekend at the beginning of September. Southwest, which is the largest U.S. operator of the Max jets, will scrap about 100 flights a day because of the change. Boeing has completed a software fix, but it's not clear when it will be approved by the FAA and international regulators.

Airbus might make an electric-hybrid jet. The European plane-maker is considering powering its most popular model, the A-320, with a revolutionary propulsion system. This would be the biggest advance in the plane industry in many years. Airbus has been working with Rolls Royce and Siemens to develop the hybrid engine, which could be ready for rollout in the next 15 years. The company will weigh the progress of technology and competition from rival Boeing before making a decision.
