Firefighters around the state battle fires in hot weather conditions

Posted: Updated:
JACKSON TOWNSHIP -

Firefighters across the state battled fires in temperatures that were in the mid- to upper-80s Thursday.

Crews fought a fire at a home on Toms River Road in Jackson Township around 2:30 p.m. Thursday. A yellow ranch home caught fire, which caused serious damage to the roof and rear of the house. Police say that no one was hurt. But neighbors tell News 12 New Jersey that a dog belonging to the homeowner did not survive the fire.

Firefighters were also in North Brunswick for a fire at an apartment complex on Trinity Street. Officials say that the fire started in the basement where mattresses and pieces of furniture are kept in storage. Fire officials say that due to the number of items in the basement, it took a while to knock down the fire.

One firefighter was taken to the hospital to be treated for heat exhaustion due to the warmer temperatures outside. Other firefighters were checked out by EMS under a cooling tent.

The causes of both fires are under investigation.
