Hoboken police are reminding drivers to follow traffic laws after a slew of complaints came in from city residents.
Police officers set up at the intersection of Willow Avenue and 14th Street Tuesday during the evening rush hour as a reminder to drivers. This is the intersection where most of the complaints came from. It is one of the larger intersections in the city, with three lanes of traffic coming in all four directions.
Violations include driver driving straight in the turning lanes and turning from the straight-ahead lanes. Police say that this is the intersection that has also seen the most accidents in the city for three years in a row.
“As you can see we have a store right here on the corner – a lot of pedestrians. A new apartment building here so we have a lot of children...parents, kids. There is a school in the nearby area. So it’s a heavy traffic area,” says Hoboken police Sgt. Keith Rotondi. “We just want to make it safe for everybody.”
Police handed out warnings to some drivers and issued tickets to others. The initiative lasted from about 4 p.m. through the evening rush.
The complaints came through the city’s traffic complaint email hotline.
