Westport teen builds website to get more lifeguards at pool parties
A Westport teen started her own website to keep swimmers safer at pool parties.
Daria Maya's website is called WeLifeguard.com, and it serves towns around Westport. The site helps people at pool parties hire lifeguards.
The Staples High School sophomore realized the demand for lifeguards and safety when a teacher in her lifeguarding class mentioned a local need for them. She also recalls a child being saved at her family's pool during her 7th birthday party.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission says at least 148 children died from drowning in pools and spas last year from Memorial Day to Labor Day.
"So many people are distracted these days that they don't think to hire a lifeguard and make sure that someone is actually watching all the time so that their kids are actually safe around the pool," she says.
All of Daria's lifeguards are certified by the Red Cross. Lifeguards on Daria's website charge $20 an hour.
