WOODBRIDGE -

Thousands of New Jerseyans hit the road Friday afternoon as part of the Memorial Day holiday weekend getaway.

AAA says that 942,000 New Jersey residents are expected to take a road trip to mark the unofficial start to summer. Heavy traffic was reported on most of the major roadways in the Garden State, but traffic did seem to stay moving.

AAA is also advising motorists to check their vehicles for any issues before traveling. The agency says that it expected to assist over 300,000 stranded drivers with car issues this weekend.

Many of those traveling were expected to visit one of New Jersey’s many beaches. And it is a good time to do that. Coastal experts say that a mild winter, coupled with various beach replenishment projects means that the state’s beaches are in great shape for the start of summer.
