The parents of a college student from New Jersey, killed after getting into what she thought was her Uber, are urging lawmakers to pass new legislation.
"Sami's Bill” - named for Samantha Josephson - would mean drivers have to prominently display ID, including a bar code that can be read by a cellphone.
Riders would put the QR code up to the car, and then if it's your ride it turns green. The ride-share then starts.
Josephson was killed in South Carolina in March.
Her parents appeared before a joint legislative committee in Trenton Thursday in support of the bill.
“The last thing that I want is for anybody else to sit up here in front of you, in a year, two years, in a month from now, and go through what Marci and I are going through,” said Seymour Josephson, Samantha’s father. “This is your worst nightmare.”
Sami's Bill now heads to vote in the full Assembly and Senate.
Josephson would have graduated from the University of South Carolina this past weekend.
