The people of West New York woke up to a new mayor after Commissioner Gabriel Rodriguez defeated incumbent Felix Roque Tuesday night.

Rodriguez was backed by the Hudson County Democratic Organization. Rep. Albio Sires of the 8th District also campaigned for Rodriguez.

The rest of Rodriguez' slate also won four commissioner seats. Three of the incumbents of Rodriguez' team once sided with Roque.

Rodriguez won with 3,602 votes, while Roque had 2,717 votes. Rodriguez thanked Roque for his services at his mayoral victory party, and says he's ready to work.

Roque tells News 12 in a statement, "The results of this election are dramatically inconsistent with my contact with voters on Election Day and polling data we have accumulated. We are investigating numerous irregularities and will evaluate in the near future whether to officially challenge the election."

He also says, "Should these results stand, I amm concerned about future tax increases and mismanagement by my opponents who've made many false promises.”

Roque says he's refusing to concede. Rodriguez is expected to officially take the mayor's seat in July.
