The city of West New York will soon have new leadership as Commissioner Gabriel Rodriguez defeated two-term Mayor Felix Roque in the 2019 mayoral race.
Rodriguez was endorsed by Rep. Albio Sires, as well as other Hudson County Democratic leaders.
Rodriguez says that he is ready to serve the people of West New York.
“I feel fantastic. I am proud and most of all I am appreciative to the people of West New York. West New York, we love you and above all we thank you for believing in us,” he says. “The real work starts now.”
Rodriguez and Roque were allies four years ago, but since had a falling out. Roque has been mayor for two terms. He has also been on trial twice to faces state and federal charges – but was acquitted both times.
“I thank him for his services and we’re ready to do the good work now,” the mayor-elect says.
It was unclear if Roque would concede to Rodriguez Tuesday night.
West New York was not the only Hudson County town to have a mayoral race Tuesday. North Bergen Mayor Nicholas Sacco secured his eighth term in office by defeating businessman Larry Wainstein.
