Staff, students ‘locked-in’ following social media post; increased security expected today

School administrators and police in Rockaway Township are keeping a close eye on schools today following an alarming post on social media that caused a lock-in of students and staff.
The post, which later turned out to be unfounded, had to do with Copeland Middle School.
The situation all started Tuesday following that social media post.
As a result, the school had a lock-in Wednesday from 8 a.m. to 9:20 a.m.
Students and staff were kept within their classrooms, and no one was allowed in or out of the school.
After investigating, police say the threat was not credible.
According to district officials, all schools will be talking about school safety and appropriate uses of social media.
In a statement, Rockaway Township Superintendent James McLaughin says, “Given the recent incidents that occurred in Colorado, and increasing incidents throughout our country, we believed it was important to act swiftly and in cooperation with our local police. We will continue to exercise an overabundance of caution whenever it pertains to the safety of our students whose well-being is our greatest priority.”
The superintendent also said specific lockers were inspected as part of their investigation.
No weapons or dangerous items were found.
