NEWARK -

Police officers and at least one suspect exchanged gunfire on a busy Newark street Tuesday afternoon.

Law enforcement officials say that the shootout took place on Bergen Street right outside of University Hospital Tuesday around 12:45 p.m. A Newark police detective, a New Jersey state trooper and at least one suspect shot at each other while police were conducting some sort of investigation.

Details surrounding the shooting were not released, but officials say that the shooter remains on the loose. Officials also say that no one was hurt during the shootout

The area around the hospital was roped off while investigators gathered evidence. Detectives were seen looking in and around parked cars, as well as near an apartment complex.

A description of the suspect or the vehicle that was driven has not been released.

The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office has taken over the investigation to prevent a conflict of interest with the Newark officials and Essex County.
