Baraka, Murphy officially announce MTV’s VMAs coming to Newark

The MTV Video Music Awards are officially coming to Newark’s Prudential Center.
Gov. Phil Murphy and Newark Mayor Ras Baraka made the official announcement Monday.
MTV officials say that they chose New Jersey due to its incredible music heritage. Frank Sinatra, Bruce Springsteen, Jon Bon Jovi and Whitney Houston are all from the Garden State.
Murphy says that he is happy New Jersey will host the annual music event.
“As Joe Biden would say, this is a big deal for Newark, for this building, for this state. The VMAs are as big of a night in entertainment and certainly in music entertainment as it gets,” he says.
The VMAs debuted in 1984 and have mostly been held in New York or Los Angeles.
Neither nominees or a host have been announced just yet.
