Every flag from all 50 states is flown over Liberty State Park in Jersey City during the springtime – but Mississippi’s flag will not be one of them.

State Sen. Sandra Cunningham says the flag represents hate, therefore, the governor made the decision to replace it with an American flag.

Gov. Phil Murphy saying, in part, "The Confederate symbol displayed on the Mississippi state flag is reprehensible and does not reflect our values of inclusivity and equality."

Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant fired back, saying, in part, "I'm disappointed in Gov. Murphy's actions, as I have repeatedly said, the voters of Mississippi should decide what the state flag is or is not."

Mississippi is the last state in the nation with the Confederate emblem on its flag.

Residents decided in a 2001 election to keep the flag the same, but several Mississippi cities and counties have stopped flying it in recent years.
