Residents upset over the smell coming from a landfill will hold a rally Saturday to apply pressure to the state to get it shut down.
People who live in Kearny say that the smell coming from the Keegan landfill is overwhelming and presents health hazards.
Earlier this month residents confronted the board of the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority, which owns the landfill, calling for it to be closed. The landfill is next to Kearny’s recreational ballfields, as well as residential homes.
The NJSEA says that the smell is coming from rotting construction material and heavy rainfall from last year. The NJSEA said that it would no longer accept materials such as Sheetrock and cardboard at the landfill after tests found unacceptable levels of hydrogen sulfide at the site.
But neighbors say that limiting the construction material is not enough and they want more done.
The rally march will be held Saturday at 11:30 a.m. at Kearny’s Department of Public Works building. They will march down Bergen Avenue to the landfill.
