Perth Amboy residents cautiously optimistic Outerbridge cashless tolls will fix traffic woes

PERTH AMBOY -

The Port Authority is hoping to end the typical Sunday night traffic delays and holiday backups at the Outerbridge Crossing once cashless tolling starts this week.

People who live and work in the Perth Amboy neighborhood say they are cautiously optimistic that the sometimes hourlong delays could soon disappear along with the toll booths.

Residents say that on Sunday nights - mostly in the summer and on holidays - the road gets packed with hundreds of cars trying to pass the bridge on the other side.

The Port Authority says it believes the cashless tolls fix the traffic.

The Port Authority will close the eastbound lanes of the Outerbridge Crossing into Staten Island Monday and Tuesday nights from 10 p.m. until 5 a.m. before cashless tolling goes into effect Wednesday.

The current price of tolls at Port Authority Crossings is $15 for vehicles without E-Z Pass, $12.50 for cars with E-Z pass during peak hours and $10.50 during off-peak times.
