Belleville police bike unit gets new wheels thanks to donation

BELLEVILLE -

It's out with the old and in with the new for the Belleville police bike unit.

The unit received eight new bikes during a quick ceremony thanks to a donation by Motorcycle Mall, a business that has been serving customers in Belleville for three generations.

The new fleet of bikes replaces the 20-year-old hand-me-downs the unit had been using.

"Made sure we got them the best bikes possible and used our expertise in our industry to get the right bicycles," says John Resciniti, owner of Motorcycle Mall.

The bike unit is made up of officers from a variety of departments, including detectives, traffic officers and patrol officers. They rotate between the bike and their traditional police work.

The unit is part of the department's renewed focus on community policing and is being credited with helping to keep crime down in Belleville.
