NEWARK -

Sometimes having a bad season pays off.

After finishing the season without making the playoffs, the New Jersey Devils were able to get the No. 1 pick in the 2019 NHL draft.

This is the second time in the last three years that the Devils won the draft lottery.

Last time, the team scooped up 18-year-old Nico Hischier. Hischier has scored at least 37 goals for the team since joining in 2017.

The No. 2 draft pick went to the New York Rangers.

NHL Draft day is June 21.
