Run at Jersey City park honors slain 45-year-old woman
Two weeks following the murder of a jogger at a Jersey City park, runners are joining together to honor one of the victim's favorite hobbies.
A group called Open Run had planned to do an event at Lincoln Park for more than a month, but the event has taken on a new meaning following a 45-year-old nanny's murder.
Carolina Cano's body was found in a lake two Sundays ago by the fire department. Officials say she was sexually assaulted and strangled in Lincoln Park.
Friends say on weekends, Cano, a Peruvian immigrant, would stay in Jersey City and jog around the lake before attending church services.
Police arrested Jorge Rios Doblado, 33, and charged him with murder. He has a court appearance scheduled for Thursday.
Security has since been boosted in the park, but runners say they also find relief in joining together in safety and solidarity.
"Part of it is having a group, having a sense of accountability and that's why Open Run will always be here in Lincoln Park at 9 a.m. on Sundays," says Micahel Rodgers of NY Road Runners.
Open Run says its mission is to foster a love of running by rewarding persistence and getting runners together as a group.
A memorial run for Cano is set for next weekend.
