Nassau mom pushes bill to allow nurses to work as relatives' caregiver

A Nassau County mother is fighting to become her disabled son's full-time caregiver.
Christine Scheppa's son Vincent suffered a serious head injury in a skateboarding crash in 2016. The 23-year-old is now bound to a wheelchair and needs 24/7 assistance.
Scheppa is a registered nurse. Currently, New York state law does not allow her to serve as her son's home health aide.
On Thursday, the Garden City South woman was joined by state Sen. Kevin Thomas to push for a bill that would allow nurses to work, and get paid, as their relatives' home health care providers.
The bill was passed unanimously in the state Senate. It's said to have bipartisan support in the Assembly.
