Shelton community mourns after woman killed in house fire
The Shelton community is mourning the loss of a woman killed in a house fire.
Barbara Curley, 67, died at Bridgeport Hospital Monday after being rescued from the fire on Sunday.
Neighbors say Curley lived at the residence for many years with her husband who died just a few years ago.
Both were active members of the Shelton American Legion post 16 and marched in every Memorial Day parade.
Curley taught religious school at St. Lawrence Church for more than 35 years.
The church wrote on its Facebook page, "She has touched the lives of many and will certainly be missed."
Neighbors say Curley often donated to the church and was a kind and generous woman.
The fire broke out inside her Florence Drive home in the Huntington section of town.
Fire officials say the fire may have started in the kitchen.
Curley, who was trapped inside of a bathroom in the home, was rescued by firefighters.
She was transported to Bridgeport Hospital's burn ward in critical condition where she later died.
Officials say there were hoarding conditions inside of the home, and it was very difficult to fight the fire.
The cause of the fire has not yet been released.
