6 kids hurt when bus driver suffers medical emergency, crashes
Morris County officials say that six children were hospitalized after their school bus driver experienced a medical emergency and drove the bus off the roadway.
The crash happened Friday afternoon on Valley Road. The bus crashed into a utility pole and knocked down some power lines.
“It's a terrible thing to hear. You're hoping nobody's seriously injured, obviously when you have children involved and it's the last thing you want to hear,” says Boonton Police Chief Michael Danyo.
Danyo says that were 18 students on the bus, which has just left Rockaway Valley Elementary School. The driver crashed shortly after leaving the school, according to officials.
“She veered off this road and struck the telephone pole. By the time first responders and officers arrived, they found her slumped over on the floor,” Danyo says.
Danyo says that the bus was only going about 30 to 35 mph when it crashed. Six students were treated for some scrapes and bruises.
The driver was listed in stable condition at St. Clare’s Hospital in Denville.
