Superintendent: Letter stating smoking e-cigs now allowed in school is a hoax

East Brunswick school officials say that a letter circulating social media stating that students will be allowed to use e-cigarettes in school is a hoax.
The letter referenced a fake policy called the “EB One (Hit) Initiative,” which it says would allow students to take one hit of “all Juul and other e-cigarette products per visit to a bathroom stall.”
School Superintendent Dr. Victor Valeski says that although the letter looked real, he assures parents that this is not school policy.
"It had my signature at the bottom. It looked like legitimate letterhead, but as I started to read the content I realized very quickly it was a forged document,” Valeski says.
The fake letter circulated social media Sunday, causing a fury of questions from confused parents who were wondering about the change in policy at the school.
"It was so professional looking that people thought it was a legitimate letter,” Valeski says.
But Valeski says that the hoax is a punishable offense and that school officials are hoping to find the people behind the hoax.
“We're actively investigating along with the East Brunswick Police Department,” the superintendent says. “We’re probably looking at a long-term suspension for the student.”
Valeski says that smoking of any kind is prohibited on school grounds. He says that the letter had made its way to at least one other school.
